Public Safety and Entertainment Get Boost in Snohomish County's New Budget Plan

In a notable fiscal move, Snohomish County's 2024 budget of $1.6 billion, exceeding the previous year's by 9%, has been approved. It features a divisive 1% property tax hike and the elimination of eight public defender positions following the cessation of temporary federal funding. Moreover, an additional $300,000 has been allocated to enhance the county fair's entertainment offerings, funded by event admissions, amidst some concerns over the timing and use of these funds.

House Passes Key Stopgap Funding Bill to Avert Shutdown, Senate to Vote Next

The House of Representatives has passed a critical stopgap funding bill to avert a government shutdown, with the Senate's approval still required. This bipartisan bill, reflecting the new political dynamics under House Speaker Mike Johnson, sets two separate funding deadlines for different government sectors in early 2023. It aims to maintain funding for essential services, excluding additional aid for Israel and Ukraine, and allows more time for Congress to negotiate full-year spending. The White House has affirmed President Biden's readiness to sign the bill, emphasizing a commitment to stable funding without controversial policy additions.
