Washington's Bold Legal Moves: Enhanced Voting Rights and Groundbreaking Employment Laws in 2024
In Washington State, several new laws will take effect in January 2024, bringing significant changes in various areas, including minimum wage, sick leave, cannabis testing, gun laws, and voting rights. Here's a detailed overview of these changes:
1. Minimum Wage Increase: Washington State will set the highest minimum wage in the U.S. at $16.28 per hour, a 3.4% increase from the previous year and more than double the federal minimum wage of $7.25. This applies to workers aged 16 and older, while those aged 14-15 can be paid $13.84 per hour.
2. Local Minimum Wage Adjustments: In Seattle, the minimum wage will vary based on employer size, with larger employers (501+ employees) required to pay at least $19.97 per hour, and smaller employers (500 or fewer) paying either $19.97 or $17.25 (if they contribute to medical benefits or the employee earns tips). Tukwila will have a similar structure, with the highest minimum wage set at $20.29 for large employers and varying rates for smaller employers.
3. Paid Sick Leave Expansion: Washington's Paid Sick Leave Law, mandating one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked, will now include construction workers. This is significant because these workers often miss out on this benefit due to the nature of their job, which involves working for multiple employers and rarely staying 90 days with a single employer.
1. Pre-Employment Drug Testing Changes: A new law (SB 5123), effective January 1, 2024, restricts pre-employment drug testing for marijuana. Employers are prohibited from discriminating against job applicants based on lawful, off-the-job marijuana use, and cannot rely on pre-employment drug tests that screen for nonpsychoactive cannabis metabolites in hiring decisions.
1. Gun Purchase Waiting Period: A ten-day waiting period will be required for purchasing any kind of gun, expanding the previous requirement that was limited to semi-automatic weapons.
2. Voting Rights Act 2.0: This new law strengthens the ability of civil rights organizations and indigenous tribes to challenge irregularities in voting systems at the county level.
These legislative changes reflect Washington State's progressive approach in addressing workers' rights, public safety, and democratic processes. The increase in minimum wage and expansion of paid sick leave benefits, in particular, highlight a commitment to improving the economic well-being and health security of its workforce. The new cannabis testing law represents a shift towards a more nuanced understanding of marijuana use in relation to employment, while the updated gun laws and voting rights act aim to enhance public safety and democratic integrity, respectively.

Gaza is experiencing a devastating health crisis, with widespread homelessness and a collapsing medical system due to military conflict. The World Health Organization has passed an emergency motion to help, but the situation remains dire, with high infection rates and non-functioning medical facilities. The motion, although not opposed by the United States, faces criticism from Israel for its focus and approach.

SPICED ORANGE GLAZED HAM
Ingredients:
1 bone-in spiral-cut ham, (about 8 pounds)
1 cup chicken stock
1 cup red pepper jelly
2 teaspoons grated orange peel
1 tablespoon orange juice
1/2 teaspoon Ground Saigon Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon Ground Ginger
1/4 teaspoon Ground Cloves
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Place ham, cut-side down, in large roasting pan. Pour stock into pan.
2. Mix red pepper jelly, orange peel and juice, and spices in small bowl until well blended. Brush 1/2 of the pepper jelly mixture over ham, gently separating the slices so glaze can reach middle of ham. Cover loosely with foil.
3. Bake 1 hour, basting occasionally. Remove foil. Brush with remaining pepper jelly mixture. Bake 45 minutes longer. Serve ham with pan drippings.
