Mount St. Helens Eruption: 44 Years Later, Seismic Advances Offer Hope
Mount St. Helens erupted 44 years ago, and since then, seismic tracking technology has advanced significantly. This progress is especially important for communities like Orting, which faces the threat of lahars from Mount Rainier. Mayor Josh Penner, who grew up with a fear of volcanoes, now leads efforts to prepare for such risks. Orting recently conducted the largest lahar evacuation drill in history, involving 45,000 people. Despite extensive monitoring of Mount Rainier, experts highlight the need for better instrumentation on other regional volcanoes like Mount Baker and Glacier Peak.
