Crackdown on Illegal Street Racing: New Law Enforces Stricter Penalties

Several new laws are coming into effect in Washington state on June 6, 2024. These include changes impacting a variety of areas such as wages, firearm regulations, and employment practices.

Minimum Wage Increase: Washington state's minimum wage will rise from $15.74 to $16.28 per hour, the highest in the country. This increase follows the consumer price index and is part of an initiative passed by voters in 2016​.

Firearm Purchase Regulations: House Bill 1143 introduces a mandatory 10-day waiting period for all firearm purchases and requires buyers to complete a safety training program. This is aimed at enhancing gun safety and reducing violence​.

Cannabis Use and Employment: Senate Bill 5123 prohibits employers from discriminating against potential employees based on their off-duty cannabis use. However, this law does not apply to safety-sensitive positions or override federal regulations​​.

Paid Sick Leave for Construction Workers: Senate Bill 5111 mandates that construction workers earn one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked, starting after 90 days of employment. This leave can carry over into the next year if unused​.

Illegal Street Racing: Senate Bill 5606 aims to curb illegal street racing by increasing penalties and enforcement measures. This law responds to a rise in dangerous street racing activities across the state​.

Shooting Near Garfield High School Spurs Lockdown and Safety Concerns
