Ultra-Orthodox Draft Controversy: Israeli Court Ends Yeshiva Funding

The Israeli High Court has recently ruled that ultra-Orthodox Jewish men must be drafted into the military, halting state funding for their yeshiva studies. This decision, which has sparked significant controversy, stems from a long-standing debate about exemptions from military service granted to ultra-Orthodox men since Israel's founding in 1948. Historically, these exemptions allowed men to engage in full-time Torah study instead of serving in the military, a privilege not afforded to other Jewish Israelis. The court's ruling mandates that the government must start conscripting ultra-Orthodox men immediately, with the Attorney General stating that around 3,000 men are expected to be drafted by the end of 2024. This decision came after the expiration of previous legislation and the government's failure to present a viable alternative plan for increasing Haredi enlistment​.
