Washington Fights Kroger-Albertsons Merger, Citing Risks to Jobs and Prices
Washington state is challenging the merger between grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, which would create the second-largest U.S. grocery chain. Attorney General Bob Ferguson argues the merger would harm competition, leading to higher prices and job losses, especially in Washington where the companies dominate. Workers and unions are concerned about reduced union protections and potential store closures, drawing parallels to previous grocery mergers that resulted in similar issues. Kroger and Albertsons argue the merger is essential to compete with retailers like Walmart and Amazon, though opposition from labor unions and the FTC continues. The court's decision could have wide-reaching effects for grocery employees and consumers nationwide.

Death Toll Rises as Israeli Strikes Target Homes in Gaza
Israeli airstrikes on Gaza killed 16 Palestinians, including women and children, in two separate strikes. A home in Nuseirat refugee camp was flattened, resulting in 10 deaths, while six more died in a strike on a Gaza City home. Israel targets militants but often hits civilians, with over 41,000 Palestinians killed since the conflict began.
